As the weather warms up this week, many households will no doubt be happy to hear the boiler firing up a lot less after an underwhelming spring so far this year. But while the warmer months help take the pressure off our energy bills, one expert is saying it's the perfect time not to forget about your boiler.

While it's an appliance that might go to the back of your mind during summer, Ryan McNicholl, from Spares Direct, said doing so could cost you dear come autumn and winter. Instead, he said, it was the ideal time to give it some love.

Ryan said: “During the summer, it's easy to forget about your boiler and overlook its maintenance, but doing so can lead to costly problems down the line. When temperatures drop again, people typically switch their heating systems back on.

"Common issues we see involve components seizing up, with oil heating systems being prone to water condensation in the oil tank - brought on by the warmer weather - and gas systems encountering problems with the circulating pump. Regular maintenance not only prevents urgent issues like breakdowns, but also extends the lifespan of boiler parts and reduces repair costs. The summer period provides the perfect opportunity for routine maintenance, offering minimal disruption when we are least reliant on our central heating.”

Ryan's tips for your boiler’s maintenance this summer

Arrange your annual service

Schedule your boiler's annual service sometime during the summer months. This ensures that any potential issues can be identified and addressed before they become major problems. A professional service will not only optimise your boiler's efficiency but also save you money on energy bills in the long run.

Turn down the heat

During the warmer months, you can reduce the workload on your boiler by lowering the temperature setting on your thermostat. This not only helps to save energy but also prevents unnecessary wear and tear on your boiler’s components. Most modern boilers have a ‘summer mode’ or a lower temperature setting specifically designed for this purpose.

Give your radiators some TLC

Take the opportunity during the summer to bleed your radiators. Bleeding removes any trapped air, ensuring that your radiators heat up efficiently when you eventually switch your heating back on in the colder months. Check for any signs of corrosion or leaks around your radiators and valves, and address them promptly to prevent further damage.

Occasionally switch your heating on

Even though you may not need heating during the summer, it's a good idea to occasionally turn it on for short periods. This prevents the internal components of your boiler from seizing up due to lack of use, helping to maintain its functionality ready for winter.

Ryan added: “By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your boiler remains in optimal condition, ready to provide reliable heating when the colder weather returns.”
