Five teens in 'serious' condition after being 'thrown' from car after horror East Kilbride smash

Five teenagers are in 'serious' condition following a horror crash in East Kilbride.

At around 8.55pm on Sunday, June 2, an 18-year-old was driving a black Vauxhall Astra on Crookedshields Highway near to its junction with Crookedshields Road, when he appeared to lose control and strike a tree.

Emergency services raced to the scene and all occupants were taken to city hospitals where medical staff describe their condition as "serious".

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said four casualties had been "thrown" from the vehicle, while one person remained trapped inside.

Fire crews managed to safely remove the trapped individual from the wreckage.

The 18-year-old driver and two male passengers aged 17 and 18 were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

A 16-year-old male passenger was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and a 15-year-old boy was taken to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow.

Road Policing Officers are now appealing for information as their enquiries continue.

Sergeant Stewart Taylor of the Road Policing Unit at Motherwell said: “As our enquiries continue, I’d appeal to anyone with information to come forward. I’d be particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw what happened, saw the black Astra being driven, or who has dashcam footage from the area around the time.

“Anyone with information is urge to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference number 3653 of 2 June, 2024.”

Earlier today, a spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 8.56pm on Sunday, June 2 to reports of a road traffic collision on Crookedshields Road in East Kilbride.

“Operations control mobilised two appliances to the scene and on arrival firefighters found that a car had collided with a tree. Four casualties had been thrown from the vehicle, whilst one person remained trapped.

“Firefighters removed the trapped casualty from the vehicle, and they were transferred to hospital by Air Ambulance.

"The remaining four casualties were passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”
