Flight diverted 3,000 miles to Manchester Airport after 'medical emergency'

A flight was diverted to Manchester Airport this afternoon, more than 3,000 miles from its destination.

The plane was on its way from Frankfurt in Germany to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on Wednesday, May 8, when it started its diversion to Manchester Airport. Manchester Airport confirmed the diversion was due to a "medical emergency" on board, with the flight diverting to the nearest airport.

According to Flight Radar, the Condor flight left Frankfurt at 11.45am and is scheduled to land in Manchester at 2.52pm.

The plane was spotted circling over Merseyside on Wednesday as people took to social media to question what was going on.

One person said: "It's currently circling over my house in St Helens! Presume its got a lot of fuel to burn off?"

Another said: "It's holding at 6000ft and circling between Kirkby, St Helens and Wigan."

A spokesperson for Condor told the ECHO: “There was a medical incident with a guest on board flight DE2016 from Frankfurt to New York-JFK today. The cabin crew is trained to handle such situations and took all necessary measures and informed the airport immediately.

"The flight was diverted to Manchester as a precautionary measure, where medical staff were on standby and the guest was handed over to the care of the medical staff. The flight will be continued to New York-JFK afterwards.”
