Gavin & Stacey is coming back this Christmas, James Corden and Ruth Jones confirm
James Corden and Ruth Jones have confirmed that there will be a new episode of Gavin & Stacey this Christmas. The rumour that there would be one more episode of the Barry Island-set sitcom, which last aired in 2019, was first reported back in February.
TV and film industry news website, Deadline, stated that a new episode is in development/pre-production and cameras would roll in a few months time on the show, which is produced by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow, Jones’ Tidy Productions and Fulwell 73, which is co-owned by Corden.
Now the former US talk show host, who plays Smithy in the sitcom, has posted a picture of himself and Ruth on Instagram with the caption: "Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James."

Ruth appeared on Radio 2 in March and said "never say never" about Gavin & Stacey returning to screens. She said: "James and I think those characters exist, that they really exist, and that Nessa is still working down the slots in Barry Island at the moment, we like to think their lives are carrying on down there."
The Welsh co-creator also damped down rumours of the return and also the supposed bidding war for the show between Netflix and the BBC.
Speaking on RTE Radio 1 in Ireland, Ruth said: "It's lovely that people love it. It's sadly a rumour... if there was something to say James and I would happily announce it." You can keep up to date with the latest TV and showbiz news by signing up to the newsletter here.
The rumours began after TV and film industry newsite Deadline reported that filming for the Christmas special would take place this summer. Deadline also reported that the majority of the main cast will likely return for the special.
There has also been rumours that Netflix and BBC are in a bidding war over the sitcom, which Ruth also commented on. She said: "A bidding war – where's this coming from?" she continued. "James and I talk about Gavin & Stacey a lot – it's a huge part of our lives. We are completely grateful for what it's done for our lives."
But it will return to the BBC for one final episode with the corporation saying: “We’ll have: A chicken bhuna, lamb bhuna, prawn bhuna, mushroom rice, bag of chips, keema naan, nine poppadoms and the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey!!!
“Coming this Christmas Day on BBC One and iPlayer.”
Gavin & Stacey was last on TV on Christmas Day back in 2019 when it drew in almost 12 million viewers. The final scene was a huge cliffhanger that saw Jones' Nessa propose to Corden's Smithy.
