George and Amal Clooney donate $1m to groups fighting white supremacy
George and Amal Clooney are the latest high profile celebrities to throw their support behind the anti-racist movement in the US and have donated $1million to the “ongoing fight for equality”, following Jennifer Lawrence’s call to action on social media to identify white supremacists at a rally last week.
The married couple – who share two-month-old twins Alexander and Ella together – have given the hefty sum to Southern Poverty Law Center and they want to encourage others to “collectively” stand up to hate.
George said in a statement: “Amal and I wanted to add our voice (and financial assistance) to the ongoing fight for equality. There are no two sides to bigotry and hate.
“We are proud to support the Southern Poverty Law Center in its efforts to prevent violent extremism in the United States. What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate.”
It comes after Jennifer asked her fans to identify ‘racists’ who gathered to participate in the deadly Unite the Right rallies, which joined various hate groups (including neo-Nazis) in America last week.
Lawrence shared pictures and wrote on her official Facebook page: “These are the faces of hate”
Participants were carrying torches and swastika-bearing flags, and she added: “Look closely and post anyone you find. You can’t hide with the internet you pathetic cowards!”
