Those tuning into BBC Morning Live on Thursday, May 2, were joined by Helen Skelton and co-host Gordon Smart. The radio presenter stood in for Gethin Jones on the programme after it was confirmed the Welsh star would be absent from the episode.

Ending Morning Live on Wednesday, May 1, Helen told viewers: "That's all we've got time for today, I will be back with you tomorrow at 9:30am alongside Gordon Smart, have a great day everyone."

And opening the show on Thursday, a chirpy Gordon joked he was like a "supply teacher," on the breakfast show, only popping in now and again. He also admitted he hadn't finished his BBC Radio 5 Live shift until 1:15am.

He told viewers: "Hello and welcome to Morning Live, it's great to be back Helen Skelton."

"Good to have you back," Helen said as Gordon quipped: "Supply teacher pops in now and again, Gordan Smart."

Changing the subject to talk about the UK's unpredictable spring weather, Gordon then said: "It's a beautiful sunny morning here, I finished work at Radio 5 Live at about 1:15am, short sleeves, Scottish man, walking out to my hotel and thought 'this is it, summer is here,' and then of course woke up in the morning and the weather further south was absolutely atrocious through the night, thunderstorms everywhere."
