Netflix series The Residence has signed on Giancarlo Esposito to replace the late Andre Braugher.

The Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor was set to star in the new show, executive produced by Grey's Anatomy's Shonda Rhimes, before his passing late last year.

Deadline has now confirmed that Breaking Bad and The Mandalorian star Esposito will take over the role of White House Chief Usher AB Wynter, with Braugher's previously-filmed scenes set to be reshot with the new star.

“I couldn’t be prouder and more honored to be stepping into Shondaland’s The Residence for someone that I loved and respected and cherished in Andre Braugher,” Esposito said.

“To be afforded the opportunity to create in his honor with this incredible team extends the depth and breadth of his legacy through all of us who loved him so dearly.”

The two had a touching history, with Esposito following Braugher on Homicide: Life on the Street as a series regular following the latter's exit in the late 1990s, before the pair starred together in the movie version.

Also announced to be joining the cast of The Residence are former Saturday Night Live star and US senator Al Franken, who will play a senator called Aaron Filkins, Better Call Saul's Andrew Friedman as director of the National Park Police Irv Samuelson, and FBI: Most Wanted's Julian McMahon as Australian prime minister Stephen Roos.

The series had paused production last year due to the Hollywood strikes after filming half of its episodes, and was set to recommence in January before being further delayed following Braugher's death in December. Filming has now recommenced.

The show is described as a "screwball whodunnit" that is "set in the upstairs, downstairs, and back stairs of the White House" as a murder occurs during a state dinner.

Based on the 2015 book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House by Kate Andersen Brower, the series will be led by Orange is the New Black's Uzo Aduba as eccentric detective Cordelia Cupp, with an impressive wider cast too.

They include Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Ken Marino, Ant-Man's Randall Park, This Is Us's Susan Kelechi Watson, The Power's Edwina Findley and My Name is Earl's Jason Lee, as well as Kylie Minogue – who will play herself.

The Residence will stream on Netflix.
