Gogglebox star George Gilbey has died, Essex Police have confirmed.

Gilbey, who starred on the Channel 4 programme with mum Linda and stepdad Pete from 2013, reportedly fell from a height whilst at work.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “We received a report of an incident at Campfield Road in Shoebury at around 10am [on Wednesday], during which a man who was working at height had fallen and sustained an injury. The ambulance service including air ambulance were in attendance.

“Sadly, the man died at the scene. We will continue liaising with partners including the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). A cordon remains in place at the scene.”

The official Gogglebox account on X (formerly known as Twitter) paid tribute to Gilbey, writing: “George was part of the Gogglebox family for eight series alongside his mum Linda and step-dad Pete.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Linda, and George’s family and friends at this very sad time.

“The family have asked for privacy.”

Gilbey also took part in the 2014 edition of Celebrity Big Brother, where he placed fourth.

Geordie Shore star Ricci Guarnaccio, who also appeared in the same series, took to social media to express his sympathy.

“Breaks my heart but George, you are well and truly going to be missed my friend,” he wrote. “Always lit up the room, cared for others, and the memories we made I’ll cherish for ever brother. From CBB to speaking to you last week, I’m going to hugely miss you.”

While Gilbey and his family were axed from Gogglebox after his appearance on Big Brother, the family returned in 2016. In 2018, Gilbey left, although his mother and step-dad continued to feature until 2020.

Gilbey’s death comes just two years after his stepdad, Pete, passed away from bowel cancer.
