Grand National horse numbers that are lucky and unlucky for 2024

The week of the Grand National at Aintree Racecourse is finally upon us.

On Saturday, April 13, the greatest steeplechase will take place at the earlier time of 4pm. As well as a new time, this year the total number of horses in the Grand National has been cut from 40 to 34, to reduce the risk of incidents during the race.

The reigning champion from last year, Corach Rambler, is returning to compete again and is aiming to win the Grand National for the second consecutive year. However, he faces stiff competition from Vanillier.

It's one of the hardest races to call, but according to a study from Lottomart there are some lucky and unlucky numbers to bet on. For every favourite that wins, like Corach Rambler last year, horses like Mon Mome (100/1 in 2009 and 66/1 Auroras Encore in 2013) find a way.

Some people prefer to forget about the odds and pick their favourite numbers, or colours and hope for the best. Number 13 might be unlucky for some, but for the Grand National it's actually got a good record at Aintree.

Winning lucky Grand National numbers:

Analysis of Grand National outcomes over the past 22 years reveals certain numbers appearing more frequently among winners. Out of 17 distinct winning numbers in this period, 10, 13, 29, and 35 have been successful.

Notably, 29 and 35 have each won twice in the past decade, including Auroras Encore in 2013 and Minella Times in 2021; both wore the number 35. Auroras Encore in particular defied the 66/1 odds to storm to victory in 2013.

Meanwhile, Pineau De Re and Rule The World emerged victorious in 2014 and 2016 respectively with number 29. Indeed, numbers between 11 and 29 have produced 12 out of 22 winners, indicating their historical advantage. In 2023, Corach Rambler broke the trend by winning with the number 26, marking the first victory for that number in 22 years.

The only single digit number to win the Grand national more than once in the last 22 years was the number six, with Comply Or Die and Don’t Push It winning in 2008 and 2010; they thundered to victory with odds of 7/1 and 10/1 respectively.

Losing Grand National numbers:

Some numbers may be less appealing, for example, the numbers eight and 39 have not had a top-six finish in over 20 years. Top-weighted horses with single-digit numbers generally do not have good odds of finishing a race, let alone winning one.

Horses with the number one, for example, have not finished seven out of the last 10 events. The number 31 has only completed one race since 2007.

Meanwhile, the number 20 has never completed a single race; this number’s record has been marred by instances of being inadvertently brought down by a falling horse ahead or side-lined by an errant, unseated horse.
