'Hitwoman' wanted over botched Birmingham contract killing 'arrested in Armenia'

An alleged female 'assassin' wanted by police over a botched Birmingham hitjob has reportedly been arrested in a dawn raid this morning, Tuesday, July 2. It has been claimed Aimee Betro was held by officers in Armenia.

The 44-year-old, from Wisconsin, America, was alleged to have aimed a gun at Sikander Ali outside his home in Acocks Green in September 2019. But the gun jammed and he escaped, it is alleged. She had allegedly disguised herself in a hijab during the attack before she fled to America days later.

Fugitive Ms Betro has become the centre of a hunt after father and son Mohammed Aslam and Mohammed Nazir were convicted of conspiracy to murder. The pair will be sentenced next month.

MailOnline reportedly tracked Ms Betro down to a rented one-bed flat on the outskirts of Armenia's capital Yerevan. The media outlet informed West Midlands Police of her whereabouts. It came after they obtained CCTV of her running errands and a copy of her passport. It reports the force asked for a news blackout until she had been taken into custody.

It is reported that she is due to be extradited back to the UK. She would then be formally arrested by West Midlands Police. A police spokesman told BirminghamLive: "We are aware of today's developments and are liaising with the relevant authorities."

Last month a jury unanimously found 30-year-old Nazir guilty of conspiracy to murder, possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, perverting the course of justice and fraudulent evasion of a prohibition. Nazir's father Aslam, 56, was also found guilty by majority of the murder conspiracy but cleared of the firearm offence. Both men, from Elms Avenue, in Derby, will be sentenced on August 9.
