Crowds of Palestinians are waiting by the Rafah border crossing from Gaza into Egypt, amid hopes a humanitarian corridor into the enclave will open.

Despite hopes the crossing would open on Monday, Egypt said its discussions with Israel over the border crossing had not been productive.

"There is an urgent need to alleviate the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza," Egypt's foreign minister Sameh Shoukry told Reuters.

"Until now the Israeli government has not taken a position on opening the Rafah crossing from the Gaza side to allow the entrance of assistance and exit of citizens of third countries."

The US said it was hoping for the border to open, despite a White House spokesperson earlier saying its hopes for the Rafah crossing to open up had been "dashed".

“There is currently no ceasefire and humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip in exchange for the expulsion of foreigners,” Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said in a translated statement.

Gaza has been under near constant bombardment over the past week, after Hamas carried out an unprecedented attack on Israel that left more than 1,300 dead.

More than 2,700 people in Gaza have been killed in Israeli air strikes over the past week, while over 1 million Palestinians have been told to evacuate the north of Gaza ahead of the ground invasion.
