Latest Stoke-on-Trent forecast as UK to bask in '30C summer'

Meteorologists have predicted temperatures are set to rise across North Staffordshire this week. It comes as parts of the UK could even see highs of 23C as we enter May.

The switch in conditions comes after a cold spell hit last week with some parts of the country even forecast to have been hit by snow. Now temperatures are expected to hit the teens across the Potteries this week as we head into a warmer-looking May.

Some forecasters reckon this summer will bring 30C temperatures to the UK. In addition weather maps show we could see temperatures of 20C in the first two weeks of May in North Staffordshire.

In the coming days and Louis Lear, a weather broadcaster with the BBC, says a 'warmer story' will unfold around the country.

Louis said: "April 2024 has been pretty disappointing but hopefully we are going to be able to close out the month on something a little promising. It is certainly going to be a warmer story over the next few days, with some sunshine around. There will still be some rain at times, the winds not quite as strong but a notable breeze. As we move into Tuesday that low pressure is still there but there is still the potential for some warmth and for some sunshine to develop. The wind direction is swinging round to southerly that’s tapping into some warmer air coming from up from the near Continent and it means that temperatures will be slightly above average for the latter stages of April as we close out the month."

Meanwhile Jim Dale, senior meteorologist with British Weather Services agree warmer weather is on the way. Jim told The Express: "We’ll get some 20C tasters long before the 13th but given the poor weather of late a switch-change is becoming more and more likely. Probably not in one go and I’m hesitant to put a figure on something 15 days away, but I do feel it will be a universal stepping out of the cold/cool into something notably warmer and in the end drier.”

But BirminghamLive reports how Mr Dale says the country was going 'in the right direction' for rising temperatures and a scorching heatwave. He set out when Britons could expect temperatures "well into the 30s" this summer.

He said: "We have been through a very wet winter and early spring - record-breaking - and the expectation is that we would see a drier summer to even things out. In May, I expect the weather to still be choppy as we are coming out of this dull, changeable weather still, which has dominated winter and spring.

"We are starting to rev up through May into being a warmer month, a sunnier month - that adds up to more pleasant days. A lot of Europe is getting the scorching hot temperatures. Central Europe just had it. Eastern Europe is getting it at the moment. It was Spain earlier in the year.

"I would suggest we will share in some of that in the latter stage of May, and into June and July. We will see climbing temperatures well into the 30s in the prone areas. That is the expectation. You only have to look at the ground in the southeast. For the last two weeks it has been far drier than the previous two. We will see further rain bands in the next couple weeks but we are moving in the right direction."

He said that the chances of Britain breaking the 40.3C temperature record set in July, 2022 was "doubtful but still possible". Weather maps from WX Charts show temperatures will get up to around 23C on parts of the south coast on May 10 - while it will be around 20C in the Potteries.

Latest Stoke-on-Trent forecast

According to the Met Office and today will see a largely dry day with temperatures getting up to around 12C in the afternoon - but it won't feel warmer than 9C. There's also a chance of some light rain tonight and into the early hours.

Those temperatures will bounce up on Tuesday with a dry day and sunny intervals seeing a high of 17C. Wednesday, May 1, will bring 16C high and dry conditions. There will be highs of 17C every day from Thursday to Sunday.

The BBC looks into next week and is forecasting some rain and sunshine on Monday with a high of 17C. The Beeb reckons it will then be dry through to May 12 with sunshine and highs of between 15C and 16 on each day.

Met Office's UK long-range forecast

May 3 - May 12: "During the first weekend, northern parts of the UK are likely to be predominantly dry, while areas of rain or showers, perhaps heavy and thundery, clear erratically from the south to usher in a spell of drier weather here too. There is likely to be a fair amount of low cloud in the east at times, with spells of coastal fog, but also temperatures generally above average for the time of year.

"Through the following week, all areas are likely to see a mixture of periods of rain and drier interludes. Overall, northern, especially northwestern, parts of the UK will probably be driest and sunniest, while the more changeable conditions remain more likely in the south. Temperatures should remain close to or a little above normal for early May."

May 13 - May 27: "In this period, the chances of unsettled weather are slightly less than usual in the north and about the same as usual further south. Therefore, some spells of wet weather are likely for all, but perhaps especially across southern areas while the driest conditions relative to normal are probably further north.

"The chance of below or above average temperatures is fairly balanced overall, but it is worth noting that average temperatures themselves rise by around 1C per week at this time of year."
