Birmingham City are close to agreeing terms with popular striker Lukas Jutkiewicz, BirminghamLive understands.

The 35-year-old, who has spent the last eight seasons with Blues, is due to be out of contract at the end of the month and faced the prospect of ending his St Andrew’s career on the sour note of a relegation.

Blues revealed last month that they had offered both him and veteran goalkeeper John Ruddy a fresh deal and it seems Jutkiewicz is close to putting pen to paper.

That will be a big boost for new manager Chris Davies who will need experience and attacking options in the squad he must now build to escape League One and return to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Jutkiewicz has seen his game-time limited in the last couple of seasons, he started only three league matches last term and just 18 the year before but he remains a valuable option off the bench and indeed came back when still injured at the end of last term to try and spark something to save the club from relegation.

Since joining Blues from Burnley in 2016, first on loan and then permanently for £1million a few months later, he has played 330 games and scored 67 goals.
