Man taken to hospital after being hit by car in Whitley Bay

A man was taken to hospital after being hit by a car in North Tyneside.

The man, who is in his 60s, sustained injuries after being hit by a car on Whitley Road in Whitley Bay on Sunday afternoon. He was taken to hospital and the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene assisting police.

The Great North Air Ambulance helicopter was seen landing on Whitley Bay Links at around 5.20pm, coinciding with the end of the town's food festival.

Inquiries into the collision are continuing and the man's injuries are said to be non-life threatening. Anyone with information is urged to contact Northumbria Police.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Just after 5pm yesterday (Sunday), we received a report that a car had struck a pedestrian on Whitley Road in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside. Emergency services attended, and a man in his 60s was taken to hospital with injuries described as non life-threatening.

“The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene to assist officers. Inquiries are ongoing surrounding the circumstances of the collision."

A spokesperson for the Great North Air Ambulance added: "On Sunday our critical care team was activated at 5.09pm to reports of a road traffic collision in Whitley Bay.

"We had a paramedic and doctor on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 5.22pm. Our team worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) to assess and treat a patient, and the patient was taken to hospital by the NEAS road crew."
