How Many Star Wars Characters Are There? Data Scientists Have The Answer

Ever wondered how many Star Wars characters there are? Some data scientists wondered the very same thing and got to work figuring out the total.

Not only counting characters from the seven Star Wars films so far but also the expanded nerd-friendly universe that includes books, comics, video games and more, the character count comes to a staggering 21,647.

For reasons only fully understood by themselves, researchers at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland plotted the most important characters on a bizarre map that shows the connections between the characters.

The researchers chose 7,563 characters to include on the map, 1,367 of which are Jedi and 724 Sith.

Despite the movies and their related stories being set in a galaxy far, far away, almost 80 per cent of the major characters are human.

The researchers extracted the data from Wookieepedia, the fan-run online Star Wars encyclopaedia.
