Alan Shearer wasted no time in responding to a football fan who criticised one of his most famous goals for England, after the Newcastle United legend was accused of 'slicing' one of his goals against the Netherlands in Euro 1996.

Right before he signed for NUFC in the summer of that year and having helped then club Blackburn Rovers win the Premier League title a year earlier, Alan was England's star striker as they hosted a tournament on home turf for the first time in decades. Having scored in a 1-1 draw with Switzerland in the Three Lions' opening game, Alan then opened the scoring in the highly anticipated clash with Scotland at Wembley, before Gazza capped a 2-0 victory with a sublime strike and legendary celebration.

England then cemented their position at the top of their group with a blistering 4-1 victory over well fancied Netherlands, in what some fans believe is one of the best ever England performances at a major tournament. The partnership of Shearer and teammate Teddy Sheringham proved far too much for the Dutch defence, as the pair got two goals each.

One of Alan's goals in the tie saw some great build up play from Steve McManaman, Gazza and Teddy, before he then fired the ball into the net. The goal was shared by the England account on X on Tuesday night, with a caption that read: "A classic goal in a classic EURO 96 fixture!" However one fan, called Dave, clearly not as enamoured with Shearer's strike, replied: "It might be me but I thought shearer was slightly fortunate with that as it could easily gone the other side of the post , looked like he sliced it."

And , by Wednesday morning, Big Al had hit back, directly responded to his critic to quip: "I think it’s you Dave!!!!"

Supporters were quick to side with Alan, with one commenting: "Of all people, imagine questioning Shearer’s ball striking!" and another reacting: "shearer ain't having it one bit, always committed to it and I love it. Never forget where I was for this game it was amazing
