The rider of a motorbike has been taken to hospital with serious injuries following a crash in Gateshead.

A car and a motorbike collided at the junction of Whitehill Way and Dykes Way at around 4.40pm on Sunday. Emergency services, including police and paramedics, rushed to the scene.

The male rider of the motorbike was found to have sustained serious injuries. He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead for treatment.

The road was closed for around 50 minutes while the emergency services dealt with the collision.

Northumbria Police said they received a report just after 4.45pm on Sunday from the ambulance service of a collision on Dykes Way, High Heworth, in Gateshead between a motorbike and a car.

A spokesperson said: "Emergency services attended the scene, where the rider of the motorbike was found to have sustained serious injuries. He was taken to hospital for treatment. The road was closed for a short amount of time but re-opened to traffic just after 5.30pm."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) said: "We were called at 4:40 on Sunday to a two-vehicle road traffic collision at the junction of Whitehill Way and Dykes Way, Felling. We dispatched a double crewed ambulance and one patient was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital."
