Yahoo News Mt Druitt stabbing: man charged after allegedly chasing bystanders with box cutter at Sydney football match
A man has been charged after police allege he chased people with a box cutter during a football match in western Sydney before being restrained by members of the public.
About 5.45pm on Monday emergency services were called to Heber Park in Hebersham, near Mt Druitt, after reports of a 24-year-old man with a knife.
Officers attached to Mount Druitt police area command attended the scene and found members of the public had detained the alleged offender.
Police said the man allegedly used a “box cutter-type knife” to “slash” another man, in his 20s, across the neck.
A crime scene was established and a knife was seized for forensic examination.
The alleged victim was treated at the scene for injuries to his neck and head before being taken to Nepean hospital in a stable condition.
Police said the alleged victim had been discharged from hospital after suffering a “significant wound”.
The man with the injuries to his neck required several stitches before being discharged from hospital, Detective Ch Insp Tickner said.
Tickner said the alleged offender was “well known” to police. He said mental health had not been ruled out as a possible factor in the alleged attack.
He added that the man was not from the Hebersham area but was “familiar with the Mount Druitt area”.
He was initially taken to Nepean hospital for assessment, where he remained under police guard.
He was then taken to Mt Druitt police station, where he was charged with two counts of stalking or intimidating another person with the intention of making them fear physical harm, common assault and wounding a person with the intention of causing grievous bodily harm.
He was refused bail and was expected to appear at Mount Druitt local court on Tuesday.
