Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa has explained why his Doctor's outfits keep changing.

The Sex Education actor will embark on his first set of adventures as the Fifteenth Doctor when the new series premieres on BBC One and Disney+ on Saturday, May 11.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media at a Q&A event for the world premiere of the upcoming season, Gatwa revealed how the Doctor's travels have led him to accumulating his eclectic style.

"The Doctor's travelled throughout time and space. He's been to a few thrift shops. He's got a large, large wardrobe. You will see, we see a lot of outfits," he said.

The actor went on to explain how integral the costume department is in making the show, saying: "Pam Downe is our costume designer. She is incredible. She is a force of nature and just amazing.

"She would just present us with the most incredible designs and then we get to talk to her and we can choose and obviously we would speak about the episode and what is going to be needed practically but also what makes us look hot. It's an important part."

Elsewhere in the interview, Gatwa and Gibson teased details of the cameos from Strictly Come Dancing duo Shirley Ballas and Johannes Radebe – who are set to appear in the season's second episode, titled 'The Devil's Chord'.

"It's just the craziest thing, and it was crazy to film it, but it was just equally as special. That day we were dancing with them, we had a ball. We had so much fun. [Dancing] wasn't included in the audition process, let's just say," said Gibson.

"We had amazing choreographer, Jack Murphy, who just whipped us into shape with such kindness and intention," added Gatwa.

Doctor Who will return for its 14th series on May 11 at midnight, airing on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
