He was the subject of a furious rant by Noel Gallagher after he pulled out of a charity gig he had promised the former Oasis star he'd play - but Ed Sheeran has come out in defence of his actions and said he had every intention of performing.

But the redheaded singer admitted that when he agreed to play the Teenage Cancer Trust gig, he was unaware that he would actually be on the other side of the world at the same time the concerts were taking place.

Ed, 22, was approached by Gallagher last year who wanted to secure him as one of the acts who would be performing at the week of gigs which took place at London's Royal Albert Hall and come to an end tonight.

He agreed to play but then Noel launched an angry rant against him and Mumford & Sons - who also pulled out after agreeing - and raged: "Everybody says yes to your face. Everybody. And then the agent will call, and their management will call and then their Pr will call and say, 'Ah, they're going to be in Australia at the time.' Really? Well, they never said that to me."

But it turns out that Ed was in Australia, but he had no idea he would be when Noel signed him up and today he came forward to explain hi self.

"I'd love to do it next year. I actually told him I would do the gig whenever he wanted, but the week they were planned I was in Australia with gigs already booked and sold out," he explained to The Sun newspaper.

"Had it been any other time I would have made it happen but I found this out after I'd said yes. I think it would be worse saying no instantly without knowing, to be honest, and I said any other time he wants to do a show and I'm not on tour, I will 100 per cent do it."

Last night, Noel took to the stage at the Royal Albert Hall - and also managed to end one of the UK's longest chart rivalries when he was joined by Blur's Damon Albarn.

Blur and Oasis were huge music rivals back in the Nineties but last night they united on stage - with Mod legend Paul Weller on drums!
