After months of speculation, the identity of the new Doctor Who will be revealed on Sunday and whilst many names have been bandied about since Matt Smith announced his departure in June, actor Peter Capaldi has been labelled as the front runner to become the 12th Doctor according to the latest odds.

According to William Hill, fans may soon be introduced to Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor as a result of being the 11/8 favourite to take on the role that has been played by Matt for the past few years. Although, Peter may be pipped to the post by Daniel Rigby or Rory Kinnear who have the odds of 3/1 and 5/1 respectively.

Claiming that Peter is the favourite to take over from Matt, spokesperson Joe Crilly for William Hill, said: "Peter Capaldi remains the favourite as we await the announcement, but it does not appear that the result is as cut and dry as first thought with Daniel Rigby coming in for some late support."

So with that in mind, we've decided to offer you some facts about Peter amid the predictions that he will become the next Time Lord.

3. Peter has already appeared in Doctor Who: If Peter lands the role as the iconic Time Lord, it won't be the first time he has been on the show as the actor made a cameo appearance as a fictional version of  Caecilius in the episode The Fires of Pompeii. But that's not the only time he's been a part of the show as he made a comeback to the franchise when he played the role of a civil servant named John Frobisher in Torchwood: Children of Earth in 2009.

4. Peter has worked with Brad Pitt: Peter starred in World War Z which also featured the Hollywood actor when he played the role of W.H.O Doctor.

So there you have it. But as much as we can speculate, we won't know who Matt's replacement will be until Sunday when all will be revealed on BBC One at 7pm.

Speaking of the announcement that will be made on Sunday at 7pm on BBC One, the Mail Online reported Steven saying in a statement: "The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who’s taking over the TARDIS. For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve."

BBC drama controller Ben Stephenson commented: "We can’t wait to unveil the next Doctor with everyone live on BBC1 on Sunday night.

"Amongst all the speculation and betting, there has been lots of fun and intrigue at work as we’ve been using the codename Houdini as a decoy. ‘It’s the biggest secret in showbiz, even those working with the new Doctor on other projects at the moment have no idea they are in the presence of the 12th incarnation."
