Pedestrian killed in A46 lorry crash near Gloucestershire border

A pedestrian has died on the A46 after being struck by a lorry. Emergency services were called to the crash, near Evesham, at around 6am today, Tuesday, May 7, after reports of a collision involving a lorry and a pedestrian.

West Mercia Police has said the pedestrian, who was 28-years-old, was pronounced dead at the scene. Their next of kin have been informed, the force said in a statement.

The A46 has been closed in both directions between Evesham and Tewkesbury throughout the morning and West Mercia Police estimate it will not be reopened until at least 2pm today. In a statement posted to social media, the force said: "At around 6am today emergency service responded to a collision on A46 near #Evesham involving a lorry and pedestrian. Sadly the 28-year-old pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. Next of kin have been informed. The road remains closed until approximately 2pm."

National Highways has advised drivers to avoid the area while police officers are at the scene. It adds the road is expected to be closed "for several hours".

Traffic monitor Inrix says: "A46 in both directions closed due to accident, a lorry involved between Cheltenham Road Roundabout (Evesham) and A435 (Teddington Hands roundabout, Tewkesbury). Traffic is coping well. Diversion - Take the a44 from Evesham to Childswickham, take B4632 toward Winchcombe until the B4077, follow westbound until rejoining the A46 at Teddington Hands Roundabout. Follow Hollow Square for northbound traffic."

Diversion routes are in place around the incident, with drivers southbound advised to follow the hollow black circle road signs and drivers heading north the hollow square sign.

Southbound:

Road users are advised to follow the hollow black circle diversion symbol on road signs.

• At the junction with the A44 (Broadway Road) join the A44 southbound towards Broadway.

• The the roundabout junction with the B4632 near Childswickham join the B4632 southbound.

• Follow the B4632 towards Winchcombe.

• At the junction with the B4077 turn right towards the M5 and follow the B4077 westbound.

• Continue along the B4077 westbound to re-join the A46 at Teddington Hands Roundabout.

Northbound:

Road users are advised to follow the hollow black square diversion symbol on road signs.

• Follow the opposite of the southbound route via the B4077 eastbound, B4632 northbound and A44 northbound.
