Police and fire crews scrambled to Carmountside Crematorium

Police are investigating after an arson attack on a derelict house in the grounds of a city cemetery. 'Multiple' crews were scrambled to Carmountside Crematorium to reports of a blaze at a vacant building.

Now police are appealing for witnesses over Sunday's fire. Witnesses reported both entrances to the Leek Road crematorium were blocked off by the emergency services as crews tackled the fire.

The fire at the empty house - at the corner of Leek Road and North Drive - was reported at around 7.40pm.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We have extinguished a fire that was started deliberately inside a derelict building in Stoke-on-Trent. Multiple crews were sent to Leek Road, in Milton, when flames were seen on the inside of the building on the cemetery grounds. Firefighters used hose reel jets to bring the fire under control while the electric was isolated to make the area safe. We ventilated the building and carried out a scan to make sure no hotspots were left over. No-one was injured. The incident is now with our colleagues at Staffordshire Police."

We are awaiting a statement from the police. Any witnesses can call the police on 101.
