Popular pub in historic south Essex building set for major revamp as plans revealed

A POPULAR pub in a historic building with links to the Tudors could be set for a major refurbishment as part of new plans revealed by landlords Mitchells and Butlers.

The Rayleigh Lodge, in The Chase, Rayleigh, was reportedly built hundreds of years ago as a Tudor hunting lodge by Henry VIII for the specific purpose of entertaining Anne Boleyn.

It was then since been used as a private house, before becoming a hotel, under the name of Barnaby’s Hotel.

The building is now used as a public house and restaurant. Fresh plans have been submitted for a proposed refurbishment of the building, including a revamped modern bar, replacement of loose furniture, reconfiguration of the toilets, as well as redecorating of a number of areas.

Bosses insist the works are to “enhance customer experience with no impact on the heritage significance of the building” that is Grade II Listed.

Ian Ward, Conservative councillor responsible for the Lodge ward, said: “I think the refurbishment of the Lodge will be a very good thing, which I hope helps improve customer experience.

“Of course, any refurbishment will need to comply with all necessary building regulations due to the historic nature of the building as once being part of the Boleyn Family estate.

“So, maintaining and restoring the historical connection of the building as a tourist attraction as well as a fine inn would mutually benefit both Rayleigh and Michell and Butlers economically as well.

“All that being said, and complied with, I would be happy to give my full support to this application.”

The plans also state other proposed works include upgrading the lighting, redecorating windows and rendered surfaces, as well as reconfiguration of existing cabinets and shelves.

Robert Milne, Liberal Democrat councillor responsible for the Lodge ward, added: “Rayleigh Lodge is a social asset to the community, which has to be maintained to keep up to standard, which has always been good.

“I note that it is intended that the refurbishment is to be done with care to keep Rayleigh Lodge’s heritage intact. Assets like Rayleigh Lodge have to be maintained and kept commercially viable for jobs and use in the community.”

The proposals will be considered by Rochford District Council.
