Raging Rutherglen pensioner slams 'ridiculous' parking on zig-zag lines

A pensioner has hit out at drivers who park on zig-zag lines and says the issue is rife on a busy street in Rutherglen.

David McConville, 67, says the 'entire length' of Main Street is plagued with the problem caused by motorists who park illegally.

White zig-zag lines can be found on either side of pedestrian crossings and are a way of indicating that parking and overtaking in those zones is strictly prohibited.

However, in the South Lanarkshire town, the warning falls on deaf ears with some drivers parking in the zones designed to keep pedestrians safe when crossing.

Now, David - who has lived in Rutherglen for more than two decades - fears someone could get seriously hurt and is urging South Lanarkshire Council and Police Scotland to take action.

He told Glasgow Live: "Cars are parked on zig-zag lines every day. Some days I’ve seen vans parked there and old ladies can’t get out to look before crossing.

"I’ve seen a couple of near misses where small older ladies have tried to step out to see if there’s anything coming. I’ve seen them having to step back quickly because of oncoming traffic.

"They (zig-zag lines) are there for a reason but no one is paying attention. It’s just ridiculous how they are parking and that nobody is doing anything about it."

South Lanarkshire Council said parking on zig-zag lines is an offence that "only Police Scotland can enforce".

David argues that the council should repaint some of the lines which have faded overtime, to make the zones clearer.

He added: "It’s an absolute joke and no one cares. The lines need to be repainted and it needs to be enforced by police.

"The parking wardens issue tickets if someone is in the single yellow line but walk past the zig zags which is an absolute joke.

"I’ve been complaining about it for over two years and nothing has been done. It makes me feel sick to my stomach that somebody is going to get hurt.

"It’s a safety issue and nobody is caring about it."

A spokesman for South Lanarkshire Council said: "Parking on Zig zags is an offence that only Police Scotland can enforce. The police also have powers to enforce dangerous or obstructive parking."
