Rangers have reportedly stepped up their interest in Swansea City target Connor Barron.

The midfielder has been on the radar in SA1 since the Swans launched an unsuccessful bid on deadline day back in January, and had hoped a move could be back on the agenda this summer, with Barron a free agent following the expiration of his contract at Aberdeen.

However, Swansea's hopes of landing the 21-year-old appear to be fading amid mounting interest from Ibrox.

According to our colleagues at the Daily Record, Rangers have made an improved offer to the youngster, who is widely regarded as one of the hottest prospects in Scottish football right now.

As well as Swansea, Cardiff City have recently been credited as another club to have made an offer, while there's also believed to have been approaches from Hellas Verona, Plymouth Argyle and Stoke City.

Barron is likely to make a decision soon, having recently returned form holiday. Should he make the move outside Scotland, Aberdeen would stand to bank just over £500,000 in training compensation.

However, if he was to move to Rangers, the Ibrox outfit would either need to agree a fee with the Dons, or risk going to tribunal.

Losing out on Barron would signal an early blow to Swansea's summer, with the club facing up to a substantial revamp of their squad over the coming weeks.

Boss Luke Williams says the club are already making progress on recruiting new bodies, having held talks with several potential targets.

“I can tell you I have sat with players in person and I have had several meetings with players on the laptop,” he told the BBC.

“We have put together information excellently to show the players, to show them the levels we as a club have gone to in order to recognise them.

“That gives you some indication that we are on the front foot and trying to be aggressive in the market place.”
