‘Ready For The Weekend Ride?’: Cycling Firm Colnago Apologies For ‘Sexist’ Tweet

An Italian bike manufacturer has apologised for posting a tweet depicting a female cyclist leaning over a bike under the message: “Ready for the weekend ride?’

Cycling company Colnago came under fire for the tweet, which featured a lycra-clad woman with her bottom facing the camera, as she looked over her shoulder.

Sent out to 15,000 followers, the tweet, which was later deleted, was branded sexist by many cyclists on social media, forcing the firm into an apology.

On its Facebook page, the company said: “Colnago deeply regrets the recent posting of an image and accompanying social media post that is offensive to women, and not at all appropriate.

“Colnago has long supported women’s cycling and continues to provide such support, we do not condone sexism, on or off the bike, and sincerly apologise for posting the image.

“We respect all members of the Colnago community, and we appreciate the needed feedback many have provided to us on this matter.”

The feedback came in thick and fast, with many pointing out that the woman in the picture wasn’t ready for her weekend ride, given that she wasn’t wearing a cycling helmet or shoes in the photo.

Twitter user @revchips said: “Looks like you may have accidentally turned the clock back 30 years there. Supposed to be 1 hour.”

Another user, Christina Fleming, said: “Thanks, I’ll take my business elsewhere. These kinds of sexist and objectifying ads help me be an informed consumer.”
