Spider-Man Impersonator Turns Real Life Superhero By Rescuing Family From Blazing Car

A Spider-Man impersonator turned into a real life superhero after he saved a family from their blazing car - while dressed as the webbed wonder.

Pregnant mum Lucy Day, 36, was rushing partner Stephen Grant, 39, to hospital in Eastbourne, East Sussex, on Saturday after he’d chopped off his finger with a lawnmower.

But smoke suddenly began billowing from their £40,000 Land Rover Discovery.

The couple, who had 3-year-old daughter Millie in the back, were flagged over by children’s entertainer Tom Roche - who was on his way to a gig in full Spidey kit.

The 24-year-old frantically waved at them to warn their car was on fire.

Lucy, bleeding Stephen and little Millie scrambled out of the smoking vehicle - just seconds before it burst into flames.

Accounts manager Lucy, who is 22 weeks pregnant, said: “When you are having a bad day and suddenly you see that you have to laugh."

Tom (pictured above in costume and unmasked) was with his girlfriend and on his way to perform at a birthday party when he spotted the fire.

He said: "We could smell unburnt petrol and could see smoke pouring out from under the car. It was like something out of an action film, I was expecting the car to explode at any second.

"We tried flagging them down and when they stopped I was shouting at them to get away from the car. We called them over to us and they got in the car.

"She was saying ‘we need to go to hospital’, so we drove over there as quick we could. All this while I was dressed in a full-body latex Spider-Man costume."

Hero Tom, who works for Party Time Wishes, rushed sales director Stephen to the Eastbourne District General Hospital, where doctors managed to successfully reattach his digit.

The cause of the fire remains unclear, but initial reports suggest it could have been a mechanical fault.

The relieved couple later tracked down Tom and his girlfriend to thank the pair.

The mum-of-one added: "We are so grateful for their help. He was only a young guy and I think he was a bit shaken up by the whole thing. I really want him to know how much it meant."

Lucy is currently threatening legal action against Land Rover after the car they bought new became totally engulfed a minute after they first noticed the flames - and the brakes then failed.

She said: "You buy a £40,000 car and it’s supposed to be a safe family car and then something like that happens. If we had been on a downhill we would have been screwed."

Land Rover is yet to respond to a request for comment.
