Suspect named after nine-hour standoff with police

A man has been charged after police surrounded a block of flats in a nine-hour standoff.

Emergency services were called to Liverpool Road in St Helens just after 9am yesterday, July 2. A huge police presence was visible on the street all day as officers tried to negotiate with a 44 year old man. who was reportedly making threats.

Officers were seen wearing riot gear and a drone was deployed overhead. Armed police were also spotted entering a nearby bowling alley. The man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of making threats to kill and affray.

The man has been named as St Helens resident Carl Lee. Lee has today been charged with making threats to kill and affray and will appear at Wirral Magistrates Court tomorrow, July 4.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We have charged a St Helens man following an incident yesterday, Tuesday 2 July.

"Officers were called to Liverpool Road at 9.05am to a man reportedly making threats. A cordon was put in place at the scene and a man was detained at around 4.30pm.

"Carl Lee, 44, has been charged with making threats to kill and affray. He has been remanded in custody to appear at Wirral Magistrates Court tomorrow, Thursday, 4 July."
