Suspicious substance found at constituency office of immigration minister Caroline Nokes is 'not hazardous'

A suspicious substance found in a package sent to immigration minister Caroline Nokes is “not hazardous”, police have confirmed.

Hampshire Police said they were called to Romsey Conservative Club, which is also Ms Nokes’ constituency office, in Market Place, Romsey at 11.19am today following the discovery of a suspicious substance in an envelope.

Officers attended the scene with colleagues from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and South Central Ambulance Service and police said a cordon was put in place while tests were carried out on the substance.

“Following those tests we can confirm that the substance is not hazardous and there is no risk to the public,” the force said.

Ms Nokes, who has come under fire in recent days over the treatment of the “Windrush generation” of immigrants, is not believed to have been at the office during the drama.

While police were investigating, Romsey Town Council advised people to avoid the area as roads were obstructed by emergency service vehicles.
