Teesside University has launched a series of new Degree Apprenticeships, under the leadership of Director of Professional Apprenticeships Jo Burgess here:

Today, Jonnny Munby tells us about the Accounting Finance Manager apprenticeship.

How is the course run?

The course content is delivered through four days on campus a year, as well as online sessions and activities. There are four modules a year, in six-week to ten-week blocks. Apprentices apply their learning in the workplace to gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours they need to succeed in senior accountancy roles, and are expected to engage with at least six hours per week off-the-job learning.

“We've been running full time accounting degrees for many years, but this is a new course aligned to a new apprenticeship standard that is more appropriate for someone who's working for a company training to be an accountant and wants to learn at the same time.

“We've designed the course to be primarily online. The majority of the content is delivered either with live online sessions or with e-learning If you can manage to come here for four days a year, then you can study with us from anywhere. We find that our students appreciate that flexibility, while also getting that ability to touch base with people. It's really important because as an accountant you're not just there to learn technical skills, but also how to work in teams and have the ability to discuss and present ideas.

“We have been running apprenticeships of one sort or another for some years now, so we know what the needs and priorities are and the best way to make the course accessible to as many people as possible to make sure we can provide enhanced skills back into the workplace.

“And because the rules - and percentages - change so often, our students can be confident that what they learn will be exactly what is needed when they get back to their offices.”
