Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Asda drivers told to remove three items before filling up with petrol

Drivers can improve fuel efficiency in minutes by removing three items from cars. Motorists can dramatically boost their fuel efficiency and cut down on petrol and diesel usage by following a simple tip, claims a leading specialist.

Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's drivers can limit the amount of times they are heading to the forecourt to fill up by maximising their fuel efficiency. A specialist claims that heavy items such as luggage, sports equipment and bags all increase weight which in turn can put some strain on the engine.

Rebecca Bebbington, Personal Finance expert at NetVoucherCodes, said in a warning to motorists and drivers nationwide: “Removing unnecessary items from your vehicle can reduce its weight, leading to improved fuel efficiency.

“Extra weight places a strain on your engine, causing it to work harder and consume more fuel. Regularly declutter your car by removing items that you don't need for your journey, such as sports equipment, excess luggage, or bulky items.”

Sam Sheehan, motoring editor at cinch, also said removing heavy items from a vehicle can have a major impact on consumption. He stressed road users should ensure their boot was kept “light” when travelling and should check whether any item is necessary before turning on their ignition and pulling away.

Sam explained: “In the same way you consume more energy when running with a bulky rucksack on your back, a car will use more fuel to reach your desired speed if it’s packed to the brim. Keeping your load light when heading out on a road trip can be tricky due to all the luggage stored in the boot."

Sam went on, telling drivers across the country: “But for everyday driving, make sure to take out any items you don’t need, whether that’s an unused buggy or your sports equipment.”
