This WALL-E And The Martian Mash-up Trailer Is Perfect

What do you get when you mash one of Pixar’s most beloved animations with Ridely Scott’s latest sci-fi adventure? A great trailer, it would seem.

‘The Martian’ sees Matt Damon’s Mark Watney stranded on Mars and is forced to survive alone on a desolate planet, muck like the situation WALL-E finds himself in during Pixar’s 2008 film on an abandoned Earth.

The video, edited by Tony D, illustrates perfectly the similarities, but also reveals how well the audio goes with the visuals of the adorable robot’s antics. Furthermore, he’s named the video ‘WHAT-NE’ - a mixture of both lead characters’ names.

At first, it’s kind of amusing to see the nicely juxtaposed, quickly cut images from ‘WALL-E’ over the serious nature of ‘The Martian’s’ narration. But as it progresses you begin to realise that this is a work of genius, because each shot from the Pixar flick seems to mirror what’s going on in the upcoming Scott picture. Coincidence? Yes, probably. But it’s still a nice observation.

What’s more, he’s also done a split-screen comparison of the two films - the actual ‘The Martian’ trailer and the re-cut ‘WALL-E’ one - so we can not only see how similar the two are (thanks to some clever editing), but also how well the Pixar-inspired cut steers the same path as the Scott film.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen inventive trailer mash-ups, but this is quite possibly one of the most skilful we’ve seen in a while.
