Top Cumbernauld boxer Andy Tham dies after motorbike crash as tributes paid to 'cracking guy'

A Scottish boxer has died following a tragic motorbike crash in Lanarkshire.

Andrew Tham, known as Andy, was riding his Kawasaki motorbike when it was involved in a collision with a car - a red Hyundai Tuscon - on Thursday (May 30) at around 6.50pm. The incident happened on the B8039 near Lenziemill Road in Cumbernauld.

The 28-year-old was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow with serious injuries, where he later passed away.

The Hyundai driver and passengers were also taken to hospital, and received treatment for minor injuries at Monklands in Airdrie.

The crash happened less than two weeks after Andy Tham lost to George Stewart in their Celtic Featherweight title bout.

The boxing community has paid tribute to Andy, with many sharing prayers and well wishes on social media as he fought for his life in hospital, and following news of his passing.

One posted: "Absolutely devastating news, an absolutely cracking guy. In and out ring."

Police Scotland issued a statement confirming Andy Tham's passing and confirmed the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

Sergeant Gemma Blackadder from the Road Policing Unit at Motherwell said: “Our thoughts are very much with Andrew’s family and friends at what is a very difficult time for them.

“Enquiries into the full circumstances of this crash continue. If you believe you have information that will assist our enquiries or if you have any dashcam footage, please contact 101 quoting incident number 3307 of 30 May.”
