Mexico braced for the impact of Hurricane Delta on October 6, right on the heels of Tropical Storm Gamma, which left at least six people dead amid heavy rain over the weekend.
Hurricane Delta was approaching the Yucatán Peninsula as a Category 4 storm, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.
The NHC expected an “extremely dangerous” storm surge starting on the evening of October 6. The storm intensified rapidly over the course of 24 hours and was forecast to hit southeastern Mexico later in the week with “direct aim” at Cancún.
Several popular tourist areas were evacuated ahead of the storm, Quintana Roo Gov Carlos Joaquin said on Twitter. This footage was taken inside the Cancún International Airport as travelers attempted to get home before the storm hit on Tuesday.
