New travel rule will prompt change as 72% of us admit same habit

Three-quarters of us pack food we can't live without for our holidays - including baked beans, tea bags, cereal and cheese. But many find the foods confiscated at the airport because they break travel rules.

Heinz Beanz conducted the research as some airports across the UK prepare to wave goodbye to the 100ml liquid restrictions next month. New research found 72% of people typically pack food or drink items they can’t live without on holiday, with over a quarter (27%) packing Heinz Beanz.

32% say it’s because they’re too difficult to get hold of abroad, with a further 21% saying they remind them of home.

And while holidaymakers have been keen to pack their favourite home comforts in their cabin bag, 24% have previously found their food or drink items being confiscated at airport security.

Teesside International Airport, London City Airport and Aberdeen Airport have already lifted the 100ml liquid rule, with select UK airports preparing to join them and lift the restriction next month, jet-setters will soon have more room in their carry-on for their ‘can’t live without’ food or drink items.

According to the research, over a third of Brits say they’re more likely to pack food or drink in their cabin luggage once the restriction lifts – meaning they won’t have to spend a second without their favourite treats. 38% said they actually prefer to pack their favourite food and drink items in their cabin bag, in case their main suitcase ends up on an adventure of its own.

Alessandra de Dreuille, Director of Meals & Infant UK at Heinz said: “Here at Heinz we understand the fear of being without your favourite foods, even on holiday. Our research has shown that over a quarter of holidaymakers have packed Heinz Beanz when travelling abroad – and thanks to the 100ml rule change that’s soon to come into play for some UK airports, Beanz lovers can pack a can in their hand luggage, meaning they don’t have to worry about the previous liquid limit, or being separated from their main suitcase.”

Other food and drink items Brits insist on packing on holiday include their favourite:

  • Tea bags (25%)

  • Coffee (17%)

  • Biscuits (13%)

  • Chocolate (11%)

  • Crisps (10%)
