Tropical Storm Bret Makes for Beautiful Upper-Atmospheric Lightning in Puerto Rico

A photographer based in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, recorded as Tropical Storm Bret generated some beautiful upper-atmospheric lightning on June 24.

Upper-atmospheric lightning flashes, also called transient luminous events, include “colorful phenomena with names straight out of a fairy tale: sprites, elves, and giants,” according to NASA.

Frankie Lucena said he was able to record sprites flashing “over Tropical Storm Bret”. Sprites are “flashes caused by electrical breakdown in the mesosphere,” NASA says. Credit: Frankie Lucena via Storyful
