The U.S. has unveiled its $4 billion ‘stealth’ warship.

The destroyer of the future was seen as it sailed into Rhode Island for a four-day visit.

It was the first time the ship - the Zumwalt - had been spotted in public.

Fittingly for the futuristic craft it is under the command of Captain James Kirk, a name first made famous as the character played by William Shatner in Star Trek.

At 610 feet it is the largest U.S. destroyer ever to take to the waters, as well as the most expensive.

The boat is specifically designed to avoid detection by radar.

Despite its size, the crew numbers just 147, the smallest for any U.S. destroyer since the 1930s.

The Zumwalt is heading to Baltimore for a commissioning ceremony before being deployed.

Captain Kirk said he was ready for the jokes at his name’s expense.

‘Certainly I have been ribbed every now and then with someone saying, “Yes, you’re going where no man has gone before, on this class of ship”,’ he said.

The ship is named after Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, a veteran of the Vietnam and Korean wars.
