Virginia's Guy declares for NBA draft

Virginia guard Kyle Guy announced Tuesday that he is entering the NBA draft.

Guy said he will keep open the option of returning to school in his announcement on Instagram.

Guy was one of the stars of the Virginia team that won the national championship earlier this month. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four after scoring 24 points in the overtime win over Texas Tech in the title game.

"I set a goal with my brothers when we committed to UVA," Guy said in a statement on the school's athletic website. "Three years later we accomplished that goal of winning a national championship.

"I also set a goal for myself to play in the NBA. I will be declaring for the 2019 draft and signing with an agent. I am diving in with two feet to achieve my dream, but I will leave the option of coming back to school open."

Guy has until May 29 to decide whether or not to return for his senior season.

"Kyle is taking advantage of the new NCAA rules to make the best decision for himself and his family," Cavaliers coach Tony Bennett said in the news release. "He has had a terrific collegiate career and has been a pleasure to coach. We will work closely with Kyle throughout the process and support whatever decision he makes."

Guy etched his name into school lore when he was fouled while shooting a 3-pointer with 0.6 seconds left in a Final Four contest against Auburn. Guy made all three free throws to give Virginia a 63-62 victory and the spot in the championship game.

The 6-foot-2 Guy averaged a team-best 15.4 points and made 120 3-pointers this season. He ranks second in school history with 254 3-pointers.

Guy joins sophomore guard De'Andre Hunter and junior point guard Ty Jerome in declaring for the June 20 draft.
