Why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Skipped the 2024 Met Gala

Neither Meghan Markle nor Prince Harry have ever gone to the Met Gala—and this year was no different.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not step out at the prestigious New York City fashion event. Their absence is completely understandable, given Harry has a work commitment in London on May 8, two days after the Met Gala.

He will be at the 10th anniversary thanksgiving service for the Invictus Games Foundation, where he’ll do a reading. People reported on April 29 that Meghan will not join him in the U.K. The couple will be back in the public eye soon, though.

The outlet confirmed that Harry and Meghan have accepted an invitation from Nigeria’s Chief of Defense Staff, its highest-ranking military official, to visit the country this month. The exact dates of their May trip were not disclosed.

The couple is based in California with their two children, Archie and Lili. Harry’s trip to London takes more than 10 hours from Los Angeles. This logistically makes a quick stop to New York to attend the Met Gala very tough, especially since it is an evening event with after-parties that go into the early morning hours.

Along with their travels, Meghan and Harry are also working on new projects for Netflix. Meghan, in particular, is doing a lifestyle show for the streaming company that will include cooking and gardening. The series complements her other project, the launch of her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard. So far, not much is known about what Meghan will be selling, though several famous friends of hers have teased small-batch strawberry jam from the line.
