Britain’s most prolific traffic camera has been revealed – catching more than 6,000 motorists jumping red lights in the past year.

The device in Leicester has raked in tens of thousands of pounds after catching 6,036 drivers in the past 12 months – the equivalent of 16 people a day.

The evidence led to the prosecution of 4,300 drivers between April 1 last year and March 31 this year, resulting in 687 people being fined a total of £68,700, while 3,110 drivers were sent on a re-education course.

A further 503 drivers were hauled before the courts after getting snapped by the camera on the A563 Soar Valley Way in Enderby, Leicester.

And the third was back in Leicester, where 1,199 motorists were snared on Lubbesthorpe Way.

Jonathan Clarkson, spokesperson for the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Road Safety Partnership, said: “We are reviewing our figures with a view to installing more red light cameras at other places.

“The message is quite clear, road users should stop at red lights, failing to do so can result in someone being killed or seriously injured.”

Safety first – between 2011 and 2015 there was one serious collision and 18 minor accidents on the road because of vehicles jumping red lights

Figures show that between 2011 and 2015 there was one serious collision and 18 minor accidents at the A563 Soar Valley Way site due to vehicles jumping red lights.

A spokeswoman from Leicestershire’s Road Safety Camera Partnership said: “The red light camera on Soar Valley Way is situated on a multiple lane A-road which sees high volumes of traffic, is close to a busy retail park and en-route to the M1 motorway.

“Between April 2015 and March 2016 the camera was live for a total of 353 days and recorded a traffic count of 3,113,821 vehicles during this time.

“In detecting 4,300 violations this represents 0.14% of all traffic that passed by the camera.”

Motorists can get a £100 fine and three penalty points for running red lights, which are paid to central government.
