The father-and-daughter restaurant that's the only one in Wales shortlisted for prestigious award

One of Wales' best chefs is the country's only entry in a shortlist for a top industry award. Michelin-starred James Sommerin, who runs Home alongside daughter Georgia as joint head-chef, is nominated for Independent Restaurateur of the Year at the 2024 Cateys awards.

With a low-key, blank restaurant front and accessible only by ringing a doorbell, Home serves a menu based around the best seasonal ingredients and changes every five weeks. In November 2021, just months after it opened, it was added to the Michelin Guide before achieving a Michelin star.

Home is also rated 'exceptional' in the Good Food Guide. According to James, who we spoke to in 2023, the pair wanted to create "something really special". He said: "We wanted it to be an experience, and we wanted people to put themselves in our hands. We’ll cater for specific dietary requirements, but you have to be prepared to trust us and allow us to cook for you."

The Cateys shortlist is chosen by judges known for their expertise and industry knowledge and debate the nominees to produce the shortlist. The winners will be revealed on July 2 at the Marriott Grosvenor House hotel in London.

On top of James' nomination for Home, it's been another amazing year for many Welsh restaurants who made it onto the Michelin guide, received Michelin stars, were included in the Good Food Guide and were recognised by various awards throughout the year , including the AA Hospitality Awards, the Good Food Awards, and the BBC Food and Farming Awards.
