'Magical' moment dolphins spotted swimming in the sea in Swansea Bay

This is the moment a small pod of dolphins was spotted frolicking in the sea off Mumbles. Locals enjoying a stroll along the Prom on Sunday, April 28 couldn't believe their eyes when they spotted the gorgeous creatures swimming in the twilight and, thanks to one local man with a drone, we can now all enjoy the sight too.

Local man Christopher Williams, also known by the social media handle 'crisekite,' caught the beautiful scene on his drone and has given WalesOnline permission to share the footage. In it, you can see the group of dolphins bobbing along the water and occasionally gracefully coming up to the surface.

According to BBC Countryfile, at least seven species of dolphins have been sighted in British waters, with the most common being the bottlenose and common dolphins which grow up to four metres and 1.6-2.5 metres respectfully. The common dolphins are renowned for their slim beak and slender body and curved and slim dorsal fin, whilst bottlenose dolphins are known for their grey-brown appearance, circular heads with stubby beaks and distinctive dorsal fin. Another witness told WalesOnline there were around six dolphins altogether and they were seen for around 20 minutes swimming in Swansea Bay. Swansea resident Robyn-Kate Turner said she and her fiancé, Liam, were enjoying a late night ice-cream at popular independent cafe and ice-cream parlour Verdi's at Knab Rock, Mumbles when Liam spotted something unusual in the sea.

"My fiancé Liam and myself decided to go for an ice cream with our dog Meg at Verdi's. Liam was the one who spotted the dolphins, he said: "OMG have you seen how big that fish is?!' I looked up and said: 'Babe that's a dolphin!' There was about six of them," Robyn-Kate recalled.

"There was a number of people all watching from the railings and saying how bizarre it was to see dolphins in that part of Swansea. They were there just swimming back and forth for around 20 minutes diving in and out the water... I've loved dolphins from a young age and always wanted to see them in person so [Sunday] night was just magical!"
