Meghan Markle, dubbed a 'dream guest' by Anna Wintour, has given the Met Gala a miss this year, despite the Vogue editor-in-chief expressing her desire for the Duchess of Sussex to attend.

In 2019, Wintour had expressed her wish for Meghan to attend the event alongside Kate Middleton, but without their royal spouses, Prince Harry and Prince William.

"I would love to have the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge [Kate's then-title prior to becoming the Princess of Wales] together," Wintour said during an interview with Today.

"That would be my dream couple."

"They could leave their husbands at home," she added. "It's the two of them I want."

However, circumstances have changed significantly since then. In 2019, Meghan was still a member of the Royal Family and the reported tension between her and the then Duchess of Cambridge was not as public, reports the Mirror.

In January 2020, Meghan and Harry announced their decision to step back as senior members of the Royal Family. Following their departure from duties, the couple began to speak more openly about their experiences within the palace.

In their interview with Oprah Winfrey, two senior royals' concern over the skin colour of then-unborn Archie was disclosed. Kate and King Charles were identified in the Dutch translation of Omid Scobie's book 'Endgame'.

The publishers, Xander Uitgevers, have since withdrawn the books, stating to ABC News: "An error occurred in the Dutch translation and is currently being rectified."

On another note, Harry's autobiography 'Spare' sheds light on a dispute involving the flower girl dress for Meghan's wedding. In it, Harry claims that contrary to newspaper reports, Kate had admitted to causing Meghan to cry rather than the other way around.

"Kate got things rolling straightaway by acknowledging that these stories in the papers about Meg making her cry were totally false," Harry wrote in his autobiography 'Spare'. He added, "I know, Meghan, that I was the one who made you cry."
