Robot Wars Episode 4 kicks up a Storm

Best. Episode. Yet.

These are the words uttered by anyone who tuned into ‘Robot War’ this evening, as we witnessed one of the greatest moments in TV history – when contestant robot Apollo managed to utterly destroy not one, not two but THREE house robots in a single bout.

And all that before finishing off their opponents, Storm 2.

Brilliant. Just brilliant.

But that’s not the only action we saw in tonight’s ‘Robot Wars’.

It’s described as the biggest, toughest robot fighting arena in the world… and ‘Robot Wars’ certainly delivers on that promise. Its house robots are relentless, and each round features a variety of deadly traps to traverse. The bulletproof arena may be yet to prove its worth, but it’s an imposing sight nonetheless.

And the group battles are a sight to behold.

The first group saw Apollo, Kan-Opener, PP3D and Sweeney Todd going head to head.

And this is where it gets interesting.

Introducing Apollo – the flipper robot which can launch a 50kg robot at least 6 or 7 feet. Doesn’t sound like much, but it’s everything you need to punt a rival into one of the arena pits. And as I mentioned earlier, Apollo makes great use of its flipper later in the show…

But back to the groups.

Father-and-son team Kan-Opener also field a rather impressive robot - with huge piercing claws intended to crush the competition with around 12 tonnes of pressure. “More bite than a great white,” they claim. But how will it fare in the arena?

Thankfully, it’s not long before we find out…

Despite its impressive run later in the show, Apollo looked as though it would be the first robot picked off by their competitors, PP3D. Coming in low and fast with a spinning disc attack, PP3D managed to cut loose one of Apollo’s wheels… and after losing control, it looked as though it all might be over for the Apollo team.

But they managed to rein it in, and after several devastating attacks, qualified for the next round along with PP3D.

But what about Group 2?

The second group saw Eruption, Sabretooth, Storm 2 and Terror Turtle in the arena.

I think you can guess where this is heading…

Storm 2 is billed as the most expensive robot in the competition, coming in at a whopping £20,000. Of course, ‘Robot Wars’ fans will recognise the team from the earlier shows, and were fan favourites back in the Craig Charles days. And for good reason. Another flipper, Storm 2 boasts three modular weapons which can be changed depending on who they go up against.

Impressive… most impressive.

But team Terror Turtle, weren’t quite so intimidating.

Terror Turtle’s fibreglass body proved no match for the competition… despite claims that it would be ‘quite strong’ in the arena. But it was soon grabbed by opponent Eruption and thrown clear of the arena.

And it wasn’t long before Storm 2 tore through the competition, too.

In fact, if we fast forward, we saw Storm 2 and Apollo in the final.

So what happened?

Quite frankly, this was the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Despite Storm 2’s very professional take on the ‘Robot Wars’ competition, their £20,000 killing machine proved no match for Apollo.

It’s no secret that the flippers always do incredibly well… but Apollo was incredible.

In their earlier matchup, Storm 2 showed a clear advantage with such low ground clearance. But Apollo soon showed their rivals how serious they were – by taking on house robots Dead Metal and Matilda.

That’s right, Apollo managed to flip both house robots onto their backs.

Then, in the final, it was time to take on the real opposition. No, not Storm 2… instead, they made a beeline for Shunt, immobilising him with an impressive flip that must have left Storm 2 quaking in their boots.

After that, it was all over.

Both teams put up an impressive fight, but ultimately Apollo took the victory. Outmanoeuvring their opponents at every turn, the Apollo team managed to get the best of Storm 2, executing a cunning move which saw them launching the rival bot out of the arena.

Absolutely amazing.

It’s certainly the most thrilling episode of ‘Robot Wars’ yet… and we can’t wait to see how far Apollo can go in the rest of the competition.

“It’s the first time the robot has fully worked,” said the Apollo team. “When it works 100%, we can take on anyone.”

Bring on the grand finals.
