A waiter who was fired because of his ‘aggressive’ manner towards colleagues has insisted his behaviour is simply down to him being French.

Guillaume Rey was fired from Milestones restaurant in Vancouver, Canada, because of the ‘aggressive tone and nature’ when he worked there between October 2016 and August 2017.

However, Mr Rey has now filed a complaint with British Columbia’s Human Rights Tribunal against his ex-employer and parent company Cara Operations over the dismissal.

He insists his sacking was discrimination and put his behaviour down to French culture being ‘more direct and expressive’.

Mr Rey claims he was fired for his high standards and the ‘direct, honest and professional personality’ he honed in the French hospitality industry.

However, the restaurant says Mr Rey’s behaviour violated workplace policy.

They say that the waiter was ‘very friendly and professional with his tables’ and was often assigned as ‘shift lead’.

However, they warned Mr Rey that his behaviour with other members of staff could ‘be combative and aggressive’.

The restaurant says Mr Rey was finally fired when another waiter was left ‘borderline in tears’ over a workplace disagreement.

His former employer tried to have his human rights complaint dismissed but the tribunal has rejected the application and a hearing is set to go ahead.
