Bristol Michelin-rated restaurant shortlisted for National Restaurant Awards 2024

A Clifton restaurant is among the shortlist for the National Restaurant Awards 2024. 1 York Place, which is located on the outskirts of Clifton Village in Bristol, is up for the title of Opening of the Year at this year's awards.

No stranger to accolades, 1 York Place was recently added to the Michelin Guide, and was recently visited by Thomas Parker Bowles, food critic and the son of Queen Camilla, who described the Bristol restaurant as serving "luscious sausages" and "exquisitely cooked" seafood. He was inspired to pay 1 York Place a visit after an old friend tipped him off.

Opening back in December 2023, 1 York Place is the third venture from husband and wife duo Freddy and Nessa Bird, who also run Little French in Westbury Park and Little Shop in Henleaze, their pantry and bakery store. 1 York Place offers a classic a la carte menu, with a wine list curated by Freddy himself, and dishes draw inspiration from his culinary career to date and visits to all corners of Europe.

In terms of why 1 York Place has been listed among the shortlist in this category, having opened less than six months ago (at time of writing) the independently owned 46-seater restaurant is described by Restaurant Online as being 'stripped back and casual' but also 'packing a punch gastronomically'. Dishes on the menu include the likes of crispy fried mussels, hot roast shellfish with tarragon butter, and morel and oyster mushroom wet rice.

Freddy Bird started his career at two Michelin-star restaurant, The Square, in Mayfair with chef Phil Howard, serving classic French food. He then spent a number of years at renowned restaurant Moro in Clerkenwell, cooking Spanish and Moorish food.
