Charity champion Sir Terry Waite to take centre stage at fundraiser

A Suffolk charity is gearing up to host a fundraising dinner featuring a special guest speech from former hostage Sir Terry Waite.

The evening’s itinerary, organised by Emmaus Suffolk, features a three-course meal and an interview with Sir Terry, to be held at Thorpeness Country Club on September 27.

Emmaus Suffolk has been championed by Sir Terry, who lives in the county, since its inception in 2016.

As Emmaus UK’s president, Sir Terry is expected to discuss his harrowing experiences as a captive in Beirut and offer insights on his hopeful approach to life.

His involvement with the charity helps to aid its work in supporting people facing societal isolation, long-term unemployment, and homelessness in the area.

Speaking on his affiliation with the charity, Sir Terry said: “It’s been a real privilege to see Emmaus Suffolk grow over the last few years with the support of the Suffolk community.

"The organisation delivers absolutely exceptional services that are so needed.

"I look forward to the fundraising supper to meet other supporters of Emmaus Suffolk.”

Sir Terry endured brutal conditions during his captivity by terrorists in Beirut, with more than 1,763 days spent as a hostage and the initial four years passed in solitary confinement.

Following his release, he joined Emmaus - becoming its president in 1991.

Emmaus Suffolk's chief executive, Claire Staddon, said: “We’re seeing a huge uptake in our services currently, and wish to continue growing to support different areas of the county that are disadvantaged and marginalised."

Guests attending the dinner are set to delve into a Champagne reception, followed by the enlightening interview with Sir Terry before the three-course meal and subsequent question-and-answer session begin.

The event will conclude by 10pm.

The charity's goal for the fundraiser is to expand its wellbeing services to more areas within east Suffolk.
